Dads across northern Nevada spent their Father’s Day raising money and awareness for prostate cancer. Marc Walker of Reno was one of the hundreds of men participating in the 2nd annual “Dash for Dads” 5K Walk/Run. But he wasn’t doing it alone. The family man ran alongside his son, Zylind Walker, at the event held at Sparks Marina. Together the father and son team finished with a time of 30 minutes.

“This was the best Father’s Day gift I could ever have asked for,” said Marc Walker of Reno. “Not only was I able to do a good deed with my son, but I was helping out my community.”

The goal of the Dash for Dads 5K is to raise awareness for prostate cancer. It is the second most common cancer among men. In most cases, it can be treated successfully. There are more than two million men across the nation who are prostate cancer survivors. Running this race was important to Marc Walker of Reno as prostate cancer has affected him personally.

“There are many people in my life who have been affected by this disease,” said Marc Walker of Reno. “I want to do everything I can to make sure men in Nevada know that this is a very curable disease as long as it is detected early enough.”

That’s why Marc Walker of Reno feels it is an important cause to support along with his son. Marc Walker of Reno has a strong bond not only with his family but also his community. He is actively involved in many community events and causes. It is important for Marc Walker of Reno to be a positive role model for his son, and the Dash for Dads is just one way he is doing that.

“There are boys out there who have lost their fathers to this disease,” said Marc Walker of Reno. “I want to show my son it is important to help your neighbors and be there for them when their father may not be able to.”

Marc Walker of Reno was among those who, in total, raised about $25,000 in the Dash for Dads race. All the donations and funds raised from the event goes to help local cancer patients. The money will help pay for testing, early detection screenings and medical costs for men with prostate cancer.

“It’s a wonderful cause,” said Marc Walker of Reno. “If I have the chance to help save someone’s life, why would I not want to do it?”
