The museum was established in 1927 and is has been under the governance of Florida State University (FSU) since 2000. In his will, John Ringling gave the State of Florida his property, art collection and a $1.2 million endowment. Due to lack of upkeep the estate and property were falling apart. The residence was restored in 2002 to bring it back to its former glory of being the cultural center in Sarasota.

You can also visit Mable’s rose garden, which was completed in 1913 and overlooks Sarasota Bay. Nearby in the secret garden, John and Mable Ringling, along with John’s sister Ida Ringling North are buried. On the anniversary of John’s death students from New College have been known to sneak in and place a cigar on John’s grave.

And finally, what would a museums built by the Ringling family be without a Circus Museum. Established in 1948, it has costumes, wagons, props, and equipment that paint a picture of the history of the circus. It even features a ¾ in-to-the-foot scale replica of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus from 1919 through 1938 and is the “world’s largest miniature circus.”
