Getting Past the Good Looks: Bailey Dixon

Bailey Dixon experienced judgment about her abilities and seriousness as a student due to her physical appearance while in college.

Bailey Dixon has had her fair share of discrimination due to her physical appearance. She is a lovely young woman with Southern California good looks. Blonde hair, brown eyes and a bright smile are normally a foot in the door. This all worked in the correct way when Bailey Dixon was working as a model. However, sometimes Bailey Dixon felt the absolute opposite effect.

“I remember being in college and attending one of my first serious business classes. It was like a needle scratching a record when I walked in. The professor may as well have said to me – what are you doing here? I was suddenly so self-conscious and felt I needed to prove them all wrong,” said Bailey Dixon. Once she has her mind set about something like proving others wrong, she goes all the way.

Bailey Dixon excelled in that business course and every single other one she ever enrolled in while at college. She asked questions, completed her assignments early, and impressed her professors whenever given the opportunity. She was actively involved in class and achieved the Dean’s List. Bailey Dixon was a serious student who wanted to be an entrepreneur. After a few semesters, people finally began to know this about her and she felt less scrutiny.

“Sometimes I felt like I shouldn’t wear a certain style of clothing or put on makeup for fear of judgment. Thankfully after a while I realized that I couldn’t help other people’s insecurities or perceptions. I had to stay focused on my goals and be myself. And, well, I’m blonde and bubbly at times. So what?” said Bailey Dixon?
This is not to say that her sunny looks did not help her at times. They most certainly did. Once she had a microphone in hand or on a stage, both men and women alike were paying attention.

“I learned from all the scrutiny and felt it made me stronger and a better student in the long run. However, it also made me much more aware of my expectations of others based on their physical appearance. Being more conscious of this is important to me and something I spread to friends and colleagues all the time,” said Bailey Dixon.
