Dr. Susan Cardenas is part of community initiative aimed at lowering the percentages of teen pregnancies in Southern New Mexico

 
Dr. Susan Cardenas heads up a successful initiative aimed at lowering teen pregnancy rates. Her current title is that of Co-Principal Investigator and Program Manager of Success with Adolescent Goals in the (SWAG) Program. The program works to educate the young adults in Southern New Mexico about sexuality education.

Dr. Cardenas is considered one of the top professors within the New Mexico State University, which is why she was the perfect candidate to take the lead. Her research skills and thorough knowledge of the public health sector made her the right professional to help drive the program and work to change the statistics of a growing epidemic.

SWAG is a pre-college program that helps increase both the access to education and navigating the road to success in education, which targets both young boys and girls. The program works with grades middle school to high school.

SWAG is a program of New Mexico State University in partnership with New Mexico Department of Health as well as other campus and community partners. Dr. Susan Cardenas years of experience teaching and her dedication within the public health sector, has brought forth many exciting plans for new programs in the years to come. She is an inspiration to students both personally and academically throughout the years. Besides heading up the SWAG program, Dr. Cardenas teaches undergraduate courses for the health education curriculum both on-campus online and online courses.

She brings years of experience acquiring funding and with grant writing for programs such as women’s health, sexuality education for children and young adults, maternity and children’s health. Dr. Cardenas works with many projects within the community and is the main catalyst for many outreach programs in research and health education. She has made a huge impact on students that have taken her classes both personally and academically.
