David Pedro Bica speaks out about injury prevention related to overtraining

David Pedro Bica works as an osteopathic physician that specializes in sports medicine and family medicine. David Pedro Bica is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where he received the degree to become a Doctor of Osteopathy. Upon graduation, David Pedro Bica became Board Certified in Family Medicine, and received a Certificate of Additional Qualification in Sports Medicine. With his extensive experience in the sports medicine field, David Pedro Bica has observed various sports-related injuries in amateurs and professionals.

David Pedro Bica notes that a common cause of sports injuries is overtraining. Running is growing in popularity, and David Pedro Bica has witnessed more amateur athletes suffering from injuries related to engaging in physical activities that are too taxing on their bodies. David Pedro Bica stated, “Overtraining is when an individual’s exercise intensity exceeds their recovery capacity. In the words, people train and do not give their body the appropriate time to recover.” Although David Pedro Bica is pleased that more people are becoming dedicated to physical activities, he warns to not overdo it.

More and more people are pushing their limits when it comes to fitness. “We live in a society where people want to see results. They want to be a faster runner; they want to see sudden transformations in their bodies; etc. I cannot express how important it is to listen to your body, and to progress at a healthy pace,” said a concerned David Pedro Bica. “Obtaining a desired level of fitness always takes time. When you appropriately develop and advance in athletics, you will be less likely to suffer from a sports-related injury.”

David Pedro Bica hopes that more athletes adopt professional training schedules that have the appropriate amount of rest included. “I think people believe the harder they train, the quicker they will see results. However, it is more important to appropriately condition your body and maintain your overall health. I cannot emphasize the benefits of a rest day enough! Although it may be hard to step away from training, it will provide you with more advantages than disadvantages. Rest days give your body time to appropriately recover so you can perform to your best ability on training days,” said David Pedro Bica.
