Irving, TX – A debate has long raged in the medical community about the risk vasectomies may pose in regard to prostate cancer. Just as the ink dries on one study that says risks go up if men choose this form of birth control, another study comes out with opposing findings. While some people may argue that the jury remains out on the topic, a new, large scale analysis may provide men some comfort.

The study in question involved thousands of men, some of which had undergone vasectomies and some not. The data covered a 15-year span, on average, with researchers finding no significant increase in risk witnessed in the vasectomy group. Of note, however, researchers did find a slightly elevated risk for men who had undergone vasectomies to be diagnosed with low-intermediate grade prostate cancer if they presented with the disease at all.

“The study’s findings back many others that indicate men who undergo vasectomies probably shouldn’t worry too much about increased prostate cancer risk,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. “While the jury may remain out, men are likely to find other potential risks are much more pressing.”

It is estimated that some 160,000 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the coming year. Factors that may increase a man’s risks include age, ethnicity and family history. Smoking, obesity and other lifestyle factors may also play a role in the development of more aggressive forms of prostate cancer.

“The best advice for any man who is worried about prostate cancer is to speak to their healthcare provider,” says Dr. Echt. “identifying personal risks and taking measures to address those that can be is an important preventative step. Screening, too, should be considered for men who are at risk for this disease.”
