GCHB CH Kingarthur Van Foliny Home, a spectacular wire haired fox terrier, was recently judged as the 2019 Best in Show winner of the Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. This one dog was determined by expert judges to be “The Best” dog from a field of over 3000 canines that were entered in the world’s most prestigious dog show. Does this mean that this canine is a perfect dog?

Having been judged by experts in the field of purebred dogs against the rigorous specifications and standards of the specific breed it would seem that this 2019 winner is indeed a perfect dog. However it could be argued that this dog is a perfect looking dog, with all of the required breed traits to be chosen as the best in his group, and then best of all dogs at the show, but it hardly means that he is a perfect dog.

Even the very best looking dogs can be a handful when they are at home just enjoying being a dog. On the other hand the mangiest street mutt with no pedigree a lopsided grin and the worst hair cut ever, may in fact be the perfect dog. While it can be said that no dog is perfect it is safe to also say that many dog owners would say that they in fact have a perfect dog.

The degree to which humans bond with their fur pals will more often than not be the deciding factor in whether or not they believe they have a perfect dog. As your canine develops from a pup to an adolescent to teenager, adult and finally into senior you will go through many relationship stages with your dog. You’ve worked through all the noise and mess of your puppy, spent the time going to dog training classes, you may have built a fence or a dog house, helped your pal through sickness or injury, spent hours putting up lost signs when he went missing and been woken from a blissful sleep by her incessant barking. These are the things we do as responsible dog owners to prove to ourselves and to our dogs that we love them.

In return our dogs will never judge us and will always be there to hug, talk to and even cry with in times of need. We’ll dress them up in Halloween costumes, spend great amounts of money finding them the perfect chew toys and dog beds and even spend hours talking about their latest antics with friends and family.

In the end, when they have let us know that it is time to go, that they are ready to cross the rainbow bridge, we look at them with tears in our eyes and realize that even with all their faults and all the pain we are feeling at losing them, our dog, our beloved family pet, was indeed a perfect dog.
