Reported Decline In Remote Work Spells Trouble For American Businesses

A reported decline in companies offering remote work spells trouble for American businesses, said Joseph Boll, Remote Worker CEO. He was responding to the latest HireRight Benchmark Report, which found that 62 percent of North Americans surveyed expect that none or very few of their workforce would be working remotely by the beginning of next year.

“This negative outlook from HireRight is very disappointing,” said Boll. “Remote work has proven beneficial for businesses and workers in North America and around the globe. Countless studies have shown that it is working and working well, so it’s unfortunate that some American companies are behind the ball on this.”

Remote Worker is designed to help hiring managers and businesses connect with job-seeking professionals for remote work positions. Its CEO Joseph Boll has long been a proponent for the benefits of remote work. He previously cautioned US businesses not to effectively “sabotage” themselves by shunning remote work, and retains that position in light of the latest HireRight data.

According to the survey, businesses in the United States are actually losing out to those in the United Kingdom when it comes to offering remote work, with businesses in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) more likely to offer fully remote positions.

That survey also compared the issue of pay cuts between the United Kingdom and the United States.

Boll commented, “What’s interesting is that some UK businesses have, in fact, implemented policies to reduce the pay of staff who insist on working remotely, and those businesses have faced backlash for it. But HireRight found that many North American workers would be more than willing to accept this condition just for a chance to work remotely.

“To me, this signals that North American businesses are not operating up to their full potential with remote work. With the majority of Americans expressing a strong desire for remote work, even to the point of willingly accepting pay cuts for it, but their employers still refusing to come to an agreement, it can only foster resentment and set that business up to receive resignations sooner or later.”

HireRight likewise noted that the Great Resignation is still in full swing and some sectors in the United States are already beginning to suffer labour shortages. As such, it cautioned businesses to “decide which is more important to their organization: who they have working for them or where those individuals are located”.
