Choosing a deer fence to keep deer out of a protected area does not have to be a costly and time consuming process. Nor does it even have to be a permanent installation. Fortunately a deer is large enough that a fence does not have to have a weave of fencing really small such as would be the case in fencing out rabbits, but having a small weave to keep out smaller critters is a benefit. Deer are strong and can jump very high. Where a five or six foot fence would keep out many other woodland creatures, a deer fence needs to be at least seven and a half feet high. It needs to be constructed of fencing material that cannot be broken or trampled by the hooves of deer. A hungry and determined deer can destroy poor fencing in a matter of seconds.

Deer are not considered aggressive, so this mindset is in place as property owners are considering what type of fencing is needed to keep them out. In order to break that mindset, consider that every year there are people gored to death by male deer. Antlers and hooves can wreak havoc on flesh or fence. Also, many protected areas are isolated in that they cannot be watched constantly. This allows much time for deer to destroy fencing.

Certainly deer can jump very high under a panic, but when this occurs deer fencing they usually keep running and jumping to clear themselves from apparent danger. You will never see a panicked deer stop its run for a quick browse! Some studies show that slanted fencing or a smaller fence in front of a larger fence work as well. This is correct; these ideas all take advantage of the deer's perception problem.

The strength off the deer fence is also very important. The longer a run of fencing becomes the more of a chance a deer will have an impact. The force of that impact could cause the fence to tear. Once a deer becomes trapped inside the fence it could cause even more damage. Therefore as your barrier size increases it is prudent to increase the strength in order to prevent a break from impact.

Another advantage of deer fencing is that most of it is designed to be unobtrusive electric fence for deer and won't detract from its surroundings. Mesh size on deer fencing can vary, but tends to be about two inches square, meaning it successfully blends into just about any background. Deer fencing is also completely humane and as it is not electric, it cannot inadvertently harm deer or any other animals. It needs little or no maintenance and good quality deer fence can last for several years.

When installing deer fences, it is especially important to make sure that the fencing completely encloses the protected area, regardless of its size. Sooner or later, deer will find any gap in the fencing and push through it, if it is large enough. It is also important to make sure that the bottom of the fencing is firmly attached to the ground to prevent deer from entering under the fence; the most effective method is to flare out at least a few inches of mesh onto the ground and then secure it.
