Lewisville, TX – Folks who just can’t get enough spicy foods may just find their culinary tastes are helping them stay healthy. New research is showing those who consume spicy foods on a regular basis are at a lower risk for developing a host of life-limiting diseases.

“Eating healthy isn’t just about fruits and vegetables,” explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology. “Doctors and nutritionists have long touted the need for dietary balance and this latest research helps illustrate the point while giving those who love their food hot an excellent reason to hold on to their proclivities.”

To find out more about the effects of spicy diets on health, researchers in China surveyed more than 487,000 adults ages 30 to 70. Participants were asked to report in about their health and dietary habits. Followed over an average of 7.2 years, the participants’ responses tipped researchers off to the potential benefits of working hot, spicy foods into the dietary routine.

At the end of the study, researchers found those who consumed spicy foods three to seven days a week had a 14 percent lower risk for dying from such conditions as heart disease, certain forms of cancer and respiratory diseases. Women seemed to gain a greater benefit from eating spicy than their male counterparts. Those who only ate spicy twice a week still saw benefits, but their risk of death was only lowered by about 10 percent.

“Researchers believe the capsaicin found in chili peppers might provide the protective effect,” says Echt. “Regardless, this is just another indication of why a smart, healthy balance in the diet can be very wise over the long haul. For those who love their foods hot, that preference might just help them live longer.”
