Take a walk down memory lane and rediscover these sugary treats worth munching on – and you may be inspired to hit the kitchen and make a batch again.

One example of these delicious old fashioned sweets would be saltwater taffy. Not that they have neither salt nor water in it, but it is just so good. It reminds one of walks down the pier and a final stop at the candy stall to buy a piece or two. This sticky, puller-up type of sweets comes in juicy colors that represent various flavours, giving you a hard to time to decide which one to get. The fun is in pulling the taffy several times to soften it up before it finally feels stretchy enough to pop in your mouth and chew. Be careful when you have some because you might get a sugary rush!

An old favourite would also be almond roca. In today’s times wherein designer chocolates are considered to be the “in sweets”, almond roca would be its equivalent in old fashioned sweets of yesteryears. Made of a wonderfully crunchy butternut toffee center dipped in delectable chocolate and finally rolled in crushed almonds, this almond-y treat will definitely rock your world! Some like to lick it until they get to the tough sugary center while others like to show off how strong their teeth really are by biting hard in the center to get that chocolate caramel crunch.

And of course, how could anyone forget the old fashioned sweets that are caramel apples? A favourite especially during Halloween, caramel apples are a legend among sweets back in the good old days. Imagine hitting two birds with one stone: getting your sticky caramel fix while still being able to eat your fruits, thus keeping the doctor away! Caramel apples are more fun when they are home-made. In fact, many a family back then would consider it a bonding time between parents and kids. Some even have their own specialty caramel: buttery or cinnamon-y.

Indeed, old fashioned sweets are a wonderful memory for people who grew up in decades past. It makes one think of how the children of today can ever love their “now sweets”. The good news is that many retailers all over the world still sell these old-fashioned sweets: on the internet or actual haunts where you can be lucky enough to find a stall or two peddling them.
