Anybody would love to receive jewellery, but some would be doubly delighted to get a piece that was especially handcrafted by yourself – like a name necklace! It is easy to make a cheap name necklace. The best part about this is there are really nice materials you can use – enough materials to actually inspire you to make one for every person in your circle of friends. It is a nice idea to do this for the upcoming holidays wherein such will make awesome gifts.

Scouting around for materials to be used to make a cheap name necklace would most likely have you heading out to the local craft store, but there might already be some materials lying around your house that you can collect for such a project. Do some house clean up and gather the following materials you will find to make your cheap name necklace such as old wire, cloth strips, broken beaded necklaces and assorted pendants and charms, old computer keys (the letters would make great pieces to spell out your computer savvy friend’s name on a necklace!).

Check around the house for everything and anything that you can use. Once you think you have exhausted all materials in the home, it is time to buy the basics. At the craft store, pick up a roll of twine or rope for your cheap name necklace project. Also grab a couple of metal end fasteners to tie to the end of the name necklace. If you happen to chance upon leather cords, you might as well grab a few strands for friends who are into rock style jewellery. If you have room in your budget, some hardening clay and fishing twine ought to be enough to get you started on this.

Other materials you can use would be simple chain mail from the local fabric shop, shell pieces and plastic beads, DIY paper beads (from old strips of magazine or newspaper, with glue onto one side and then rolled up to make the bead) and many more. To make your cheap name necklace, put together a collective of materials that you think would go best together such as wooden beads, shell pieces and twine. String them along and do not forget that the name necklace must have your friend’s name in the middle! Try to get creative with this aspect.

The center part where the name is should be the one where you work hardest and most creatively, some go as far as to drill holes into wooden scrabble pieces to spell out the name of their friend as a symbol of that person’s love for the game or love for letters. You can do the same using a variety of materials and keeping in mind how much you know your friend. The key to this is to list down characteristics of that person and then find possible pieces that you can use to represent him. This is a fun and enjoyable project that will not only leave you with a sense of pride but will also be a source of happiness for the other person.
