Chronic Pain Syndrome

If you experience more than one type of pain or chronic pain that remains after an injury has been treated you may suffer from chronic pain syndrome.

There are many types of back injuries which can keep you from enjoying your regular activities and from working. By understanding the main back injuries you can begin to take note of your symptoms and the various treatment methods available to you.

There are different medical practitioners available to you. The three most commonly sought out practitioners are:

1. Your doctor

Your doctor may diagnose an injury or condition and prescribe medication or alternative forms of treatment. They may also recommend you to another doctor such as a chiropractor.

2. A chiropractor

A chiropractor focuses on treating back pain, sciatica, joint problems, neck pain, slipped discs, strains, and sprains. They do not prescribe medication nor do they use surgery. Instead, chiropractors rely upon the use of spinal manipulation and manual therapies to provide you with relief from your pain and improve your function.

3. A doctor of osteopathic medicine

This doctor specializes in diagnosing and treating back pain. They focus on the whole body in lieu of a specific symptom or illness during treatment. They work on your overall well begin by treating the musculoskeletal system as a whole. These are not the only doctors from whom you may seek treatment.

You can also seek a spine specialist with expertise in diagnosing and/or treating spinal conditions and back pain. The most common are:

1. Surgeons

Orthopedic surgeons are the most common. They specialize in spinal disorders and injuries to the spine and joints.

There are surgical options that a doctor can do to help treat very severe cases of back pain and back injuries.

Every person is different and most people do not need surgery.

However, those who have things such as severely ruptured discs may require surgery if other treatment methods have failed. Almost fifty percent of people who have injuries get better without surgery and surgery is often only an option once treatment methods have failed for six months or longer.

For things such as a slipped disc, only about one in ten people end up getting surgery from their doctor.

Surgery may help if the pain you are enduring has prevented you from conducting daily tasks because it is so severe. If you have complete pain or numbness in your legs then you may also need surgery.

Surgery is a treatment option if you have a spinal fracture. It is also an option if you have an infection in your spine. You may need surgery if your spine is unstable. You may also need surgery if you have a tumor in your spine, or spinal stenosis. Again, if you have lost control of your bladder or bowel you may need surgery.

It is important that you talk to your doctor if you are considering this because it is a big decision for anyone.
