The International Fur Trade Federation (IFTF) was established in 1949 to bring together national associations and members of the full spectrum of the fur trade from all parts of the world.

It is comprised of 42 member organisations from 35 countries who seek to protect the fur trade interests, promote innovations, high standards and strict codes of practice that meet or exceed established and accepted standards for animal welfare for both wild and farmed fur. The fur trade does not trade in endangered species.

Fur fashion was again the talk of the runway as the Haute Couture collections hit the fashion shows last week and its prominence showed that fur is setting the trends for Autumn/Winter 2011/12. A study commissioned by IFTF (International Fur Trade Federation), provided an analysis of the major fur trends to come from Haute Couture, at the recently shown dazzling collections.

‘Fur as Fabric’ looked at those pieces that cleverly manipulated fur and lightweight fabrics to create prints or patterns, often with a textured feel. This was perfectly demonstrated with examples by Ellie Saab and Christian Dior and specifically by the printed full-length fur evening gown by Alexis Mabille or Alpine sweater from king of the avant-garde; Jean Paul Gaultier.

Gaultier and Mabille provided inspiration on many of the trends highlighted, such as ‘Fur Sleeves’, which both designers applied in long-haired fur to evening wear, while On Aura Tout Vu combined them with delicate lace and Quentin Veron used an asymmetric styling technique and diverse fur combinations presenting a striking appeal. ‘Shoulder Definition’ proved a key style from Giambattista Valli and Jean Paul Gaultier with capes and evening wear expressing sleek fox fur flair which harmoniously complimented one of the dominant modes for Autumn/Winter 2011/12; the ‘High Neck’. This regal look will be turning heads all season, as it takes its inspiration from the ruff worn by nobility in Elizabethan times.

Taking a tip from the animal kingdom, ‘Fur and Feathers’ were combined to make a lavishly full silhouette and were noted as the “ultimate in tactile luxury”. While following on from the Spring/Summer season’s love affair with colour; strong gemstone hues have made their way through sumptuous dyes on to the latest Haute Couture fur collections. This colourful interpretation of fur fashion not only lit up the runway but also fell perfectly in-line with the Ready-to-Wear designs shown in March.
