John Grasso Shares Insight From A Legal Perspective

A local activist of the Nonviolence Institute has recognized a need for skill development, self-self-efficiency, and job creation as contributing factors to high crime rates and addressing these concerns to be the only solutions to current gun issues.

According to the Providence police’s 12-month static report, gun crime was rising and reached a peak by May 13th. This was the day when the violent gun crimes committed, during the Carolina Avenue shooting, shocked communities in the entire Rhode Island region. 9 People died that night. According to local activist for Direct Avenue for Rights and Equality, the family of the 9 people who has died during the incident, could not visit their loved ones. This was due to Providence Police Chief, Huge Clements’ decision to deploy his police officers to be stationed at the doors to Rhode Island Hospital. He claimed suspects and victims were the same. Therefore, all victims were treated as suspects. The Providence Police Department's defines to reduce violent gun crimes was to increase patrols at high gun crime neighbourhoods.

Blake Nolan, the media consultant for John Grasso argues, “For any efforts to build relationships with local communities to be successful, we need to uplift these communities, rather than target the less privileged or people of colour and equality. That on its own will have a huge contribution to reducing violent and gun-related crimes.”

The Providence Police Department chose to opt for an increase in patrols to reduce the prevalence of gun crimes in various identified suburbs where these violent crimes became out of control.
Nolan, as the spokesperson for the trusted team of criminal lawyers in Rhode Island further argued there are a few factors that contribute to crime, such as racism, easy access to illegal guns, high capacity to guns and ammunition as well as high levels of unemployment.

Nolan agrees with the perspective of Gary Dantzler, founder and executive director of Black Lives Matter in Rhode Island, when he states, that police funds should be relocated to improve infrastructure, jobs, and opportunities for African Americans. He also refers to the astronomical economic and educational inequalities that people of colour face in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. He believes that we have an opportunity for collaboration between community organizations which could lead to unprecedented change. It is the only way the communities in Rhode Island can be a model to the country. It is the type of approach that the team at John Grasso strives for and supports.
