Rhode Island Takes A Step In The Right Direction While we are living in such a modern society, there are still 46 states in the US that still allow underaged marriages.

While we are living in such a modern society, there are still 46 states in the US that still allow underaged marriages. Several states even issued marriage licenses to children as young as 12 and 13 years old. It is a problem of such great magnitude that over 15 years, more than 200,000 of these marriages took place. Roughly around 80% of these marriages are between underaged children and adults. What it also means is that in several cases these youngsters are even below the age where they can give legal consent to any sexual activity. The team of trusted divorce attorneys at John Grasso in Rhode Island state that there are so many reasons why this archaic law is just wrong.

“As divorce lawyers, we are all too aware of the way how many people feel trapped in marriages they no longer want to be in. In the case of our clients, it is mostly people who take their freedom of choice to get out of these relationships. However, these youngsters often don’t have that choice. During a recent hearing, lawmakers heard stories of sorrow and about the suffering in the lives of so many due to the immense tragedy that often leads to rape, human trafficking, and unwanted pregnancies. It was stories of people who were failed, sold out, by the same people they trusted to take care of them” says Blake Nolan, media consultant to the trusted John Grasso brand.

Nolan then further expands how elated their entire team is about the fact that Governor Dan McKee is now putting his weight behind the many groups that have been drawing attention to this concern for so long. “As a legal practice, we only hope that many states will soon follow in the footsteps of Rhode Island lawmakers. We can only hope that children can become free again to live the lives they were meant to and not become victims of a terrible system that remains legal so far and wide merely due to loopholes in the legislation. Our team is always committed to upholding a free and fair legal system but to prevent crimes from going unpunished, there needs to legislation in place to empower the system to proceed” Nolan continues.

The decision is largely due to the immense amount of controversy the group called Unchained at Last, created in the state, in their process to canvas for legislature adjustments to protect minors from these marriages.
