The Bridge to College Math Class is a grant funded opportunity to reach students in need of one more year of math to meet their graduation requirements.
Olympia High School received a grant for the 2016-2017 school year to fund one teacher with a year of training for the “Bridge to college Math” Class. This class is only for seniors who did not pass the state SBA test their Junior year and need another opportunity to gain the needed math requirements to graduate. Joel Lewinsohn is the teacher selected to teach this class next year. He stated "that I am really excited to apply my college level teaching background to this class and really help the students gain the skills needed to be successful in the introductory college level math classes they would encounter at the community colleges."
Training will take place this summer in Portland and throughout the school year. Joel states, "This is a great way for me to grow as an instructor as we learn new ways to teach students using common core learnings and curriculum."
The Bridge to College Math has been taught in numerous school districts throughout Washington state. "I think students will gain the needed skills to leave high school and start out in 100 level math classes at community colleges. This is a great asset to our high schools in preparing students for post secondary college and career." The benefit to students is that with the successful completion of the class and a B or better, they are not required to take the Acuplacer exam and can start their Freshman year in a community college in Washington taking 100 level math classes.
