First and foremost, trust your employees to do their work. Many first time managers try too hard to keep tabs on their employees, and the constant supervision during the workday can actually hinder productivity rather than encourage it. No employee wants to work for a manager that doesn’t trust they can do their work on their own. Make sure you aren’t being overwhelming as a manager, and trust your employees to perform the duties they are tasked with.

Secondly, take advantage of team building exercises to motivate your employees. Participating in team building exercises with your employees will show them that you consider yourself to be part of the team, not just the leader, and that working together to reach goals is important. Your team is one entity, and the members need to support each other.

Third, Jeremy Priestley believes that managers should lead with understanding. Don’t get overly upset if you have a decent employee who made an innocent mistake. Forget about the error, and focus on what caused the employee to make the mistake in the first place so that it can be avoided later. This will make your team more comfortable coming to you when they problems.
