Court recorders (also known as court clerks) and court monitors have important roles in the Canadian court system. While their duties differ, Centennial College offers one program whose municipal court training will prepare students for both.
The Court Support Services offering teaches future court clerks the know-how to record and transcribe verbatim the proceedings of courts, legislative assemblies and committees, and prepare dictated reports, correspondence and statistics that require knowledge of legal terminology. It also supports future court monitors in learning to maintain the records of a court, administer oaths to witnesses, jurors, and grand jurors; and be the custodian of the court's seal, which is used to authenticate copies of the court's orders, judgments and other records.
Centennial College's program is approved by the Ministry of the Attorney General, which ensures that the knowledge students gain is not only relevant but also respected. All courses offered within the program are industry-specific and there are no elective courses. Topics include: court clerk training and court monitoring training for family, criminal and youth court as well as an introduction to word processing, current issues in Canadian law, ethics and professional conduct and more.
At Progress Campus learning is further enhanced through the use of a simulated courtroom in which students practice taking an oath and presenting before judges. Additionally, students have the opportunity to visit family, criminal, small claims and municipal court settings as well as tribunal hearings to observe court clerks and court monitors.
