Itziar Camio Has Basque and American Roots with Education in Business, Economics, English Instruction and International Development

Itziar Camio has lived primarily in California of the United States with her mother and brother, despite being a native of Spain, born in the Spanish city of Bilbao, where her father still resides. Camio has been educated in the United States, attending Taper Elementary School in San Pedro, California and high school in Lake Arrowhead, California. With Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara, Camio also studied for an Adult Teaching Certificate of English in 2005 before returning to Spain to care for her ailing father in Bilbao. Continuing her dedication to education even while caring for her Dad, Camio taught English in a private language academy in Spain during her 5 years there between 2005 and 2010. Camio saw firsthand the lack of English education in her father’s village, and initiated a small language school in the village to help the poor and underprivileged of the area learn English.

The Basque Country of Spain, where Itziar Camio was born and her father lives today, has a unique bilingual education system which allows students to choose between four different models of language instruction customized to the student’s preference for Basque or Spanish as the spoken and written language utilized by instructors. Model D uses Basque as the vehicle language with Spanish taught as a subject, and is preferred in Bilbao for primary school, while secondary education students prefer some subjects taught in Basque and others in Spanish, Model B. University students tend to choose model A, where Spanish is for classroom instruction and Basque is the subject. 97% of prep students choose English for foreign language instruction.

Although Bilbao is the home of two universities, the University of Deusto and the University of the Basque, Itziar Camio returned to the United States to continue her education at the University of California, where she studied International Development for a Masters Degree. Camio is intensely dedicated to the practice of sustainable farming, and hopes to become involved in sustainable food production. Currently, Camio is in her second year of study for a Masters in Business Administration.
