VERSAILLES — A dress code committee reached some areas of compromise Wednesday night between current Woodford County High School policy and changes sought by students.

But it's unclear whether the school's full site-based decision-making council will be ready for a vote Monday night. Principal Rob Akers wants feedback from teachers about aspects of the compromise.

Students and parents began calling for changes in the 11-year-old dress code at the start of classes in August. The brouhaha went viral online and raised the possibility of Woodford High mandating uniforms, a prospect many of the school's 1,286 students opposed.

"I think it's the start of a compromise," Maggie Hudson, 16, a junior, said of Wednesday's discussion. "It's not going towards uniforms, so, yes, I'm pleased."

The compromise is still fluid, but items that appeared to have consensus included:

■ Shirts without sleeves would be permitted, but they must not expose undergarments or skin under the arm.

■ "Racerbacks" — tops that expose most of the shoulders in the back — would be prohibited.

■ Pants that are "distressed" would be permitted, but they must not show undergarments, and they must be free of rips and tears.

■ Hemlines may be above the knee but no more than the shortest dimension of a credit card. A neckline may be below the collarbone but no more than the shortest dimension of a credit card.

Under current policy, shirts must not expose the collarbone, and shorts and skirts must be knee-length or longer.

Physical education teacher Melody Hamilton reported to the committee that 61 percent of parents supported a student proposal. That proposal called for necklines to be no lower than the width of four fingers below the base of the collarbone. Shorts, skirts and dress hemlines must extend beyond the fingertips when hands are placed at the sides, according to the student proposal.

If teachers agree to ideas put forth Wednesday, it's possible the decision-making council will vote Monday night.

Otherwise, the dress code committee might meet again (although it will not meet Thursday night, as it had discussed in late September), and a final vote might not come until the council's November meeting. The aim is to have a new policy in place in January.
