Montreal, Canada ( prfree ) April 5, 2013 - Future Electronics, a global leading distributor of electronic components, has announced immediate availability of the AS5048 Evaluation Kit from ams, enabling fast and easy evaluation for stepper motors.

The AS5048 eval kits( http://www.futureelectronics.com/en/Search.aspx?dsNav=Ntk:PartNumberSearch%7cAS5048%7c1%7c,Ny:True,Ro:0,Nea:True,N:936 ) are designed to adapt standard size stepper motors with a magnetic rotary position sensor for easy and fast evaluation of the AS5048 IC in a real application. The eval kit includes the adapter PCB with the soldered IC, four magnet holders with different shaft diameters, and the Allen key to fix the magnet holder on the shaft.

There are two eval kits available, The AS5048A eval kit is configured for SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) and PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) output signal, and the AS5048B eval kit is prepared for I2C interface and also PWM output signal. The AS5048( http://www.futureelectronics.com/en/technologies/semiconductors/analog/sensors/gyro-angular-rate/Pages/8021431-AS5048B-HTSP-500.aspx ) IC is a 14-bit magnetic rotary position sensor for absolute angle position sensing, which means 16,384 positions per 360° turn.

The AS5048 is unlike other magnetic position sensors on the market because the zero position can be programmed into the IC after assembly via simple SPI or I2C command, which eliminates the need for a special programmer. This feature makes the AS5048 even easier to implement in microcontroller-based designs for rotary position sensing.

The AS5048 is highly tolerant of misalignment between the sensor IC( http://www.futureelectronics.com/en/Search.aspx?dsNav=Ntk:PartNumberSearch%7csensor+IC%7c1%7c,Ny:True,Ro:0,Nea:True,N:4294880381-587 ) and its paired magnet and of variations in the air gap (typ. 2mm ±50%). It is also tolerant of variations in temperature ranging from -40°C to +150°C.

Applications include robotics (motor control and joint position detection), industrial (motor position and motion control, potentiometer), and medical (surgical robots, injection pumps, fitness equipment).
