ZAZ Glass explains why saying BPA free in plastics and tin linings does not really mean free

Why BPA-Free in plastics and tin linings may be meaningless.

For Immediate Release

Today, ZAZ Glass, a company specialising in 100% recyclable borosilicate glass bottles with silicone sleeves, talks about what Bisphenol A (BPA) is and that BPA free on plastic items does not necessarily mean that it is chemical free or harm free.

According to Medical News Today, Christian Nordqvist says that “Bisphenol A, often known as BPA is a chemical found in hard plastics and the coatings of food and drinks cans which can behave in a similar way to estrogen and other hormones in the human body. BPA is used to make many products, including water bottles, baby bottles and can also be found in epoxy resins which is used as coatings inside food and drinks cans. BPA can imitate our body's own hormones in a way that could be hazardous for health. Babies and young children are said to be especially sensitive to the effects of BPA.” Founder and CEO Zah’ra Moosa, ZAZ Glass says “this is one of the key reasons why glass is a smarter and favourable alternative to plastic, aluminium or stainless steel bottles.”

However, BPA-free seems to have become synonymous with “safe”. What does BPA-Free really mean? It means there shouldn’t be any BPA in it. Correct? What it doesn’t mean is that the product doesn’t contain any other toxic chemicals, synthetics, additives, etc. Only recently did the FDA recognized BPA as toxic. Roughly five years ago, scientists and the Food and Drug Administration started delivering notices about BPA and its link to a host of ailments including increased risk of cancer, obesity, early onset puberty, and diabetes. Founder and CEO Zah’ra Moosa, ZAZ Glass says “There is no BPA in our ZAZ bottles and we do not put a BPA replacement in it either.”

So how do we know the BPA replacements are safe? Author from the Primamlist.com found “A study by the University of Texas already did the work for us, by thoroughly testing 455 everyday products, most of which were labeled as PBA-free, to see if they still release chemicals that have estrogenic activity. Their conclusion:

“Almost all commercially available plastic products we sampled—independent of the type of resin, product, or retail source—leached chemicals having reliably detectable EA, including those advertised as BPA free. In some cases, BPA-free products released chemicals having more EA than did BPA-containing products.”

Based on findings, BPA-free does not mean much, and some BPA replacements tested worse.

Founder and CEO Zahra Moosa, ZAZ Glass says “glass looks great and is reusable. It is a healthier alternative for your body and the environment. It does not allow any unsafe chemicals that can make one ill, and is dishwasher safe. Glass is a 100% recyclable material which can be recycled endlessly.”

Glass is the only packaging material rated "GRAS” or "Generally Regarded as Safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration* April 2011 Omnibus survey of 1 000 consumers in the continental U.S. FDA. Thus concludes that glass has proven to be a heathy and environmentally friendly choice.
