You know the old saying - you always want what you don't have. And that's as true in beauty as it is in every other aspect in life. My case in point? Frizzy hair.

Whose in particular? Well to start, this lady's. Grace Coddington has a great head of hair - we're talking texture, volume and, yes, a certain amount of frizz.

And lately, more and more fashion girls have been ditching the diffusers - and their hair-related inhibitions - and embracing their god-given fuzz. Singers like Lorde (who sits on the cover of US Elle this month), St. Vincent, Rita Ora and Solange Knowles have made giant clouds of hair part of their look. Orange is the New Black's Natasha Lyonne and actress Juno Temple prefer to skip the blowout when hitting the red-carpet circuit. And when Erykah Badu let her locks out for Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci earlier this year, we were left with a serious case of mane envy.

Then there's that famous portrait of Kate Moss, taken by Richard Avedon in 1994, which I've got permanently pinned to my desktop.

Could the glory days of poker-straight hair be over? If it is, the timing couldn't be more perfect. With summer comes humidity and with humidity comes the big frizz. Can you imagine how much money, private agonising and how many woman-hours at the salon could be saved if we quit battling with the elements and wore our hair as is, in its gloriously unkempt state?

There is definitely something irresistible about wildly curly locks. The look is very 'editorial', harking back to the era of '70s decadence that's so popular right now. Of course, the main problem with frizzy hair is just how unmanageable it can be. Aim for Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman and it usually ends up looking closer to the 'before' model in a Frizz-Ease campaign. A few tips? Avoid daily washing, using Batiste Dry Shampoo for those in-between days instead. Gently dry your hair by scrunching it with a cotton T-shirt and choose products specifically for your hair type, such as Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercreme, which was developed by two sisters with Japanese and African American backgrounds. Aveda's Be Curly Curl Enhancer also works to intensify the curls and coax them into shape.

As for those with dead-straight hair like myself - who would also like to see their faces framed in a halo of loveliness - there is a way to recreate the look at home. Simply twist your hair into one-inch braids, spray with medium-hold hairspray such as Bumble and Bumble's Spray de Mode and straighten. (You can protect your hair from the damaging dry heat of the GHD by spritzing with Kevin Murphy Anti-Gravity Spray beforehand.) Once straightened, release the braids and brush or flip over and back comb to create cotton-candy frizz.
