Fritz Valme Pulls No Punches in the Diary of an Angry Black Man

The writer uses the power of profanity to drive the plight of the African American diaspora home.

Fritz Valme recently announced the release of his first book, Diary of an Angry Black Man. The writer had previously dropped several hints about writing a book before making it official in early 2022. According to Valme, his debut work was triggered rather than inspired by the 2020 murder of George Floyd.

The cold-blooded killing of George Floyd put the Black Lives Matter protests in high gear. It led to several social reforms on paper, but it’s debatable whether any were put into practice. In the Diary of an Angry Black Man, Fritz Valme calls out many of these issues using hard data and then drives the point home through his signature style, interspersed with expletives.

While explaining why he chose not to go with a more conventional tone, Valme’s literary agent said, “It’s human to feel angry, but Fritz has grown up with the idea that he needs to suppress even a whiff of anger to avoid being seen as the quintessential white person’s version of the angry black man. The tone, tenors, slurs, and every swear word used in this book is Fritz’s way of saying that a black person has as much a right to anger as any other person of color.

“You can’t make such a statement with flowery words because God knows they don’t understand it when we say it in their own language! Diary of an Angry Black Man is his way of saying he’s done being someone he’s not, just to belong to a world that’ll never accept him.”

Although strongly-worded, Valme’s literary agent appears to have a point. The writer allegedly dedicated more than 30 years of his life to the airline catering industry, only to leave it disillusioned and disappointed. He describes his working years as full of discrimination and underhanded tactics meant to get him fired.

Valme resigned from his position as operations manager at an airlines catering firm in 2019 soon after receiving a brain tumor diagnosis. Although he hasn’t fully recovered, his condition is under control. These days, he keeps himself busy by working on his second book, working on a black history app called 365 Blaq, teaching, staying active, and spending as much time as he can with his family.
