3 Ways to Assess the Reality of Systemic Racism

Fritz Valme assails racial bigotry endorsed by the system in debut book.

Racial bigotry prevailed in the United States for centuries, from 1525 to 1866, when 12.5 million people were kidnapped from Africa and brought to America. While Slavery and Jim Crow may be outlawed and condemned on paper, present-day African American population still endure the lasting effects of systemic racism.

Through his debut nonfiction Diary of an Angry Black Man, Fritz Valme has taken it upon himself to strongly criticize the now-insidious systemic racism that exists in the very fabric of American society. He has supported his personal accounts of systemic racism growing up as a person of color in America with hard facts and statistics.

“I’m a 59-year-old Black man who’s known racism for as long as I can remember,” said Valme while discussing his book. “I’ve had to study and work twice as hard as my White counterparts to even be in the running for any role. As a person of color, your pedigree and ability are immediately called into question when applying for or assuming any position of authority. Throughout my years, and accomplishments, I’ve never felt as if I belonged or arrived. Unlike my peers, I always was made to feel my place at the table was tenuous at best. One slip up at all only because I’m Black. If that’s not discrimination, I don’t know what is.”

According to Valme's book, here are the three ways in which the system discriminates against Black people.

1.Although Black children only constitute 18% of total preschoolers, they make up over half of the total school suspensions, directly leading to dropouts and indirectly leading to a life of crime. Valme considers himself lucky enough to defy these odds.
2.While Black people represent only 14% of the US population, they make up over 38.3% of the prison population. Valme’s book discusses the problem of assigning harsher sentences to people of color, highlighting racial discrimination in criminal justice.
3.In 2021, the unemployment rate for African American people stood at 8.6%, much higher than the national average of 5.3%. The employment rate has indisputably increased, but African American workers continue to get fewer call backs and interviews, lower wages, subpar benefits, and less job stability across all sectors.

Valme has written Diary of an Angry Black Man with plenty of expletives by design to own the ‘angry black man’ stereotype like much of the Black population has reclaimed the N-word. He resigned from his last place of employment after getting diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor without much healthcare support to focus his attention on health, family, business ventures, and activism.

The televised murder of George Floyd finally inspired Valme’s ire enough to write an entire book and create a black history app called 365 Blaq.
