For more than one year the world has had to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic which is causing millions of deaths worldwide and has caused substantial damage to the world economy.

Coronavirus has spread across communities and countries even with these measures put in place to stop transmission: -

The World Health Organization (WHO) has authorized multiple COVID-19 vaccines i.e. AstraZeneca, Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccine and this development has raised positive expectations on acquiring herd immunity. Herd immunity is having a sufficient number of the population become more immune to a specific disease from vaccination antibodies or previously contracting the disease.

When the majority of the population becomes immune after COVID 19 vaccination, the risk of infection to vulnerable communities is minimized and this ensures protection and reduces transmission.

For herd immunity to take effect, 50-90% of the population needs to get fully vaccinated before the infection rates start to decline. COVID 19 on the other hand is a highly contagious virus and herd immunity is estimated to be between 70-90%, given that the immunity lasts longer.

Slowing down the COVID 19 infection rates will require a combined effort between governments, countries and their citizens, wearing masks in public, social distancing and avoiding crowded places are one of the simple things that can help to slow down the infection rates.

The two ways to achieving herd immunity are: -
1. A large percentage of the population get vaccinated
2. A large percentage of the population gets infected with the virus

Allowing for the COVID 19 virus to spread would lead to more hospital and ICU admissions and more lives would be lost especially for patients with pre-existing conditions therefore considering achieving herd immunity through infection cannot be considered.

High vaccination rates help with achieving herd immunity and paves way for the world to return to normalcy and help protect the vulnerable population at high risks of contracting COVID 19. The vulnerable population include: -
• The elderly people
• HIV Positive persons
• Pregnant women and Infants
• Persons with compromised immune functioning
• Persons undergoing chemotherapy treatments
