Spanish Design for Russian Trains

The Spanish company Talgo has signed an agreement with the Russian state rail body RZD to design and manufacture new trains.

Spain, February 21, 2013 -- The importance of this agreement between the Spanish company and the Russian rail operator lies in the fact that the Russian rail sector is the second largest in the world, with overnight trains being required to cover 98% of the huge distances in this country. Talgo’s capacity to design and supply trains therefore provides the perfect solution to the Russian company RZD’s needs and its plans to overhaul its fleet of passenger carriages by 2030.

According to Talgo, this agreement “will make it possible to develop a modern train with all the latest features, which will meet 100% of the Russian market’s needs in terms of technology and comfort”. The company will adapt its rail technology to Russia’s specific needs in terms of climate, inside space, gauge and regulations.

This agreement underscores the commitment to drive forward economic and trade relations between the two countries and to open up new markets for Spanish companies. It also consolidates their two-way commercial relationship.

This agreement furthers the internationalisation process that Talgo embarked upon in 2007, one of the main milestones of which has been the contract to supply AVE high-speed trains for the Mecca-Medina route. The €2.4 billion agreement involved building 35 trains, with the possibility for 23 more.
