Global Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) Market (2022 Edition)

Hydrogen production using Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOECs) has gained a lot of interest recently as it could be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to generate hydrogen, especially when combined with a renewable or nuclear energy source. To assist the development and demonstration of this technology, control mechanisms for the SOEC stack must be developed to respond to changes or disturbances that may occur during operation.

The growth of photovoltaic and electronics is expected to be highest in coming years as potential applications for the SOEC include on-site and large-scale hydrogen production. Higher current densities of the SOEC system can help reducing payback period of solar plants to 7 years when surplus hydrogen is 4 times higher than the required H2. Additionally, countries are focusing on investing in SOEC technology to be used for powerplants. For instance, Germany’s “Silver Frog” project is a proposal to establish a two-gigawatt solar plant to power electrolyzers for hydrogen.

According to the International Energy Agency, hydrogen demand in 2020 was 90 Mt, almost entirely for refining and industrial applications, and produced almost entirely from fossil fuels, resulting in over 900 Mt of CO2 emissions. Electrolyzer capacity, which is required to make hydrogen from energy, has doubled in the last five years, reaching just over 300 MW by mid-2021. In 2020, global electrolysis manufacturing capacity was around 3 GW/Years, with alkaline designs accounting for 85% and PEMs accounting for less than 15%, plus some very small, artisanal SOEC and AEM manufacturing.
