Benefits of team building apply to business, not just sport

A range of team building events and activities feature throughout a sporting club’s season particularly during its pre-season. All clubs strive for victory and having a cohesive team is crucial.

Team building programs have been vital for successful sporting clubs for many years now.

In comparison, business success is also generated by an effective team. That is why having a team building plan is critical for any business, according to business leader Dwain Richardson, the Managing Director of Australasia’s largest team building providers, Corporate Challenge Events.

“Team building is about understanding, appreciating, developing and maximising the people in your team, and also the team as a unified group,” said Richardson.

“This is vital for a productive, efficient, motivated and happy team, whether that is a sporting team or a workplace team.”

Richardson said team building can be developed through participation in a structured series of activities and events.

“Team building events create time to focus on the importance of team work and what is needed to make you a better team.

“These can range from simple bonding exercises to complex simulations and multi-day retreats.

“No matter how they look, the key ingredients for any team building program are setting goals, forming teams, delegating tasks and identifying solutions to problems.

“However, it is important to establish from the outset what outcomes a business wishes to attain from a team building program, so the program can be tailored specifically for these requirements.”

Richardson outlined 10 key outcomes that team building events can provide.

“We believe that an effective and structured team building program will improve staff in teamwork, communication, leadership, bonding, confidence, responsibility, trust, morale, respect and workplace culture.

“Another important outcome that we pride ourselves on is reinforcing the value of having fun in the workplace.

“All the team building activities we deliver are fun which helps to develop confidence and trust amongst participants, which in turn encourages total team involvement and ultimately a stronger team.”

A trend that Richardson has witnessed in recent years is business undertaking team building events as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility programs.

“More and more businesses in Australia and New Zealand are participating in team building events that provide a direct benefit to a community organisation or charity.

“The power and value of giving can contribute significantly to team building. Our clients have collectively raised in excess of $1.5 million of value for charities over 21 years, with more than half of this generated over the past three years highlighting its growth.

“One of the most popular team building programs requested by our clients is called ‘Bikes for Tykes’. Since we started this program, more than 2,000 bikes have been built and donated to children’s charities.”
