• Confirmation by biopsy – A biopsy refers to the process of removing tissue samples while under anesthesia or drugs at the doctor’s office. An urologist performs the biopsy, and then a pathologist studies the tissues under a microscope to identify signs of cancer.

• Determination of a Gleason Score – After performing a biopsy to deny or confirm the diagnosis, the doctor determines a Gleason Score. The score indicates how severe the prostate cancer is, and how fast it can spread to other areas outside the gland. Essentially, a Gleason Score guides doctors on how to continue with the treatment after confirming the disease. The score ranges between 2 and 10 with 10 showing a high-risk tumor.
