Manchester United streak comes to a stop..
It seemed like Ole Gunnar Solksjaer would make a new record by winning the most consecutive number of games as a new coach in Manchester United. Burnley had other ideas. Credit should still go to Solksjaer and his team for showing the courage to come back from a two-goal deficit with 10 minutes to go and eventually draw. It was still a good game but it seemed that Manchester United were a bit over-confident and complacent as a result of their recent performances. That is why we love football eh?
Manchester City lose ground in Title chase..
It is a bit rare these days for Manchester City to not score more than a goal for 90 minutes. Sadly, it happened in Newcastle and they paid dearly for it. When one of your most important players in Fernandinho goes and causes a penalty that late in the game, you probably just chalk it up to a bad day at the office. Manchester City has recently been delivering some patchy results (and performances) and that cannot continue if they want to retain their status as the League’s best. Luckily, this recent slip did not cost them as much in this game-week.
Liverpool fail to take advantage..
Seeing as Manchester City contrived to lose to Newcastle a day before, Liverpool had the opportunity to extend the lead to 7 points. They started with a bang and there were a number of big decisions that did not go their way. Ultimately, Liverpool was very predictable and very slow in their transitions. Luckily, they were still able to extend their lead at the top with an extra point. There are also rumours of some “gamesmanship” with respect to the grounds-man’s ice-cleaning. Jurgen Klopp would probably be more worried that Liverpool has seriously struggled in their last two home games. They need to hold their heads in this crucial period of the season.
Atalanta school Juventus..
Juventus were poor during the weekend against Lazio and still managed to steal all three points. Against Atalanta albeit in the Coppa Italia, they were woeful. Duvan Zapata and Atalanta cannot seem to stop scoring and Juventus would need to step up their game drastically before they head to Wanda Metropolitano to face Atletico Madrid.
Fiorentina put seven past Roma..
This was a very unexpected score-line and Fiorentina used their speed in attack to pose a very slow Roma backline loads of problems, with Federico Chiesa also bagging a hat-trick. You get the feeling that this Roma team needs some sort of revamp, especially at the back, with them
blowing a 3-goal lead over the weekend and now shipping in 7 goals. For Fiorentina, it is “next please”.
Barcelona win on aggregate..
In the first leg of this Copa Del Rey tie, we were all shocked by how poor Barcelona was. They however made us know how good they can be after putting six past Sevilla and easily overturning the first leg score. Coutinho given the penalty to half the deficit when Suarez and Messi were available was really impressive. Ever Banega missing his spot kick turned the tide in Barcelona’s favour and they just kicked on from there. They will need all the momentum that they can get as the business end of the season is here.
