In the space of a few days, Barcelona has been to the Bernabeu twice, scored four goals (Lionel Messi did not score in any), conceded none and Vinicius Jr. has been the only shining light for Real Madrid on both of those occasions. It is a bit damning on a player like Gareth Bale (for instance) that he was practically anonymous for both legs and a precocious 18-year-old had to take responsibility for trying to make something happen for Madrid from out wide. On Saturday, the score-line was a little less embarrassing although when you get to play your biggest rivals twice in one week in your own home and not get anything from it, there is very little to be positive about. For Real Madrid, all hopes of a trophy lie with the Champions League. Can they do it a fourth time?
For Barcelona, they already looked like League winners before the weekend. After the result, there is little doubt who the La Liga winners are. Messi was not at his best although his small altercation with Ramos towards the end of the first half brought a bit of entertainment. For Barcelona though, they now lead the head-to-head encounters against Real Madrid for the first time in 87 years. (96-95, 51 draws).
Late drama in Wembley…
Tottenham hosted their arch-rivals in the early kick-off of the Premier League weekend and the game ended in a stalemate. Tottenham were not at their best (they have not been recently) and were a bit fortunate to steal a draw based on the balance of play. Both spot kicks were a bit controversial and the use of VAR would have been of huge help had it been available (we have to wait till the 19/20 season). Ultimately, Tottenham did not play well and still came away with a point while Arsenal played well and led for most of the game, they even had a chance to win and still were not able to. Both teams gradually seem to be coming to the end of an underwhelming season and would really need to step up to clinch top spots as the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea are lurking.
Liverpool lose ground…
Liverpool were held to a goalless draw in the Merseyside derby. They had decent opportunities to win it but failed to do so. Now, with nine games to go, they are a point behind current Champions, Manchester City. Liverpool has had recent draws against Leicester, West Ham, Manchester United and now, Everton. Will they regret these results come the end of the season? We still wait.
