A look at ASTM International’s new safety standard for child safety locks and latches that are attached to the interiors of cabinet doors and drawers.

ASTM International has published a new safety specification standard for child safety locks and latches.

Published on February 11, 2021, the new standard – ASTM F3492-21 – covers child safety locks and latches that can be attached to the interior of a cabinet or drawer. These products are designed to help prevent children under the age of 48 months from accessing the contents of the cabinet or drawer.

The standard covers safety requirements, test methods and marking/labeling requirements. To meet the provisions in the standard, an average breaking strength of 45.3lbs or greater must be achieved from thirty samples.

This specification does not cover:
• Devices installed on the exterior of a cabinet door or drawer
• Devices requiring installation by professionals, or that are an integral part of the cabinet door or drawer system
• Child safety locks, latches and straps intended for use on furniture or appliances as anchoring devices to prevent tip over
