Luxurious urban leisure at lively big cities is slowly finding its competition, because more people now are looking for holiday destinations that offer natural wonder and cultural center. In Indonesia, Karimunjawa has become popular during the last couple of years as tourist destination in western part of Indonesia. “The Paradise of Java” is only one of various flattering names that visitors gave to Karimunjawa, which is basically a group of twenty seven islands in which only five among them are inhabited. Large part of this area is still relatively undisturbed by industrial and human activities, creating pristine condition that enthralls local and international tourists.

The main five islands in Karimunjawa are Genting, Nyamuk, Parang, Kemujan and Karimunjawa, which are inhabited by about eight thousand people. While the main livelihoods of people here are from fishery and farming, they also have gained profits from tourism industry since several years ago. Most people in and outside Indonesia may only be familiar with Bali and Lombok as holiday destinations, but Karimunjawa turns out also offers a lot of interesting things to see and experience.

Want to visit pristine and serene beach? There are Barakuda and Tanjung Gelam Beaches, with their white sandy beach and clear blue water. Want to take a picture of beautiful sunset? Nirwana Beach is a highly recommended location to do that. There is also a diving site in Kemujan Island with unique attraction; the wreck of Panama Indonor ship that was sunk in 1955 and now become a home for various fish and coral species. And for those who prefer land adventure, there is a camping ground in Legon Lele, not far from Karimunjawa lele (catfish) farm.

What about visiting a sea turtle farm? Nearby Menjangan Besar Island has such farm where tourists can watch sea turtles and help releasing tukik (sea turtle babies) to the sea, a practice to save them from predators before being in the safe vicinity of the ocean. This island also has a more challenging marine farm; a shark farm.

Karimunjawa also offers unique cultural attractions. Visitors who come around 7 days after Eid El Fitr’ (Muslim’s celebration after Ramadhan fasting month) can witness a ceremony called Pesta Lomban. Starting at 6 in the morning, visitors can witness beautiful view of offering ritual on the beach, followed by boat race, rice cake ‘war’ and traditional dance.
