Anthony Smith worked as a teacher before becoming the academic counselor at Berkeley High School, a position he held for eleven years. Smith is a hard working individual who understands the struggles many students face growing up and is committed to helping them succeed. Having grown up living in the low-income housing projects in San Francisco, he worked his way up to become a teacher and later an academic counselor. He credits his success to his mother who encouraged him, and the community he grew up in.

Anthony Smith Berkeleyreceived his Master’s degree in School Counseling and started working at Berkeley High School in 2004. During the eleven years he worked in the school, he was actively involved in helping students reach their goals. As the counselor, he managed a case load of over 400 students and was responsible for helping them with various issues such as vocational guidance, personal, academic and social advice, writing letters of recommendation for college admission, scholarship, and internship. He also taught ninth to twelfth graders about CA State high school A-G requirements.

During his time at Berkeley High School, Anthony Smith was in charge of advising the school football team. He was successful in helping the football team win championships for the school. Smith ensured that the football team worked hard, stayed in shape, and achieved excellent grades while they were on the team. He also coached basketball, baseball, and track with PAL & Parks and Recreations.

As the academic counselor, Anthony Smith did not just deal with students at Berkeley High School, but also with parents and teachers. He organized and facilitated individual parent-teacher conferences and SST meetings, liaised between teachers and parents, and collaborated with colleagues to organize and facilitate information dissemination. His responsibilities included working with community-based organizations, therapists, social workers, doctors, and psychologists. With over 19 years’ experience in education, counseling, and collaborating, Anthony Smith of Berkeley has built a successful career for himself as an academic counselor.
