The second hindrance is the nighttime, which is experienced in every part of the world. This implies that half of the day is spent in darkness, which negatively affects the solar power generation.
This limits solar power efficiency to be under 50%, which can be eliminated by the invention of solar panels that work in darkness. Note that solar panel efficiencies in the high teens need to be taken into considerations. This can be similar to owning a car that you can only use a half the time that you intend to use it or a house for that matter.
Our lifestyles have been programmed to use electricity during both the day and night houses for; lights, run heaters or air conditioners, cook and so forth. Suppose the solar takes over, how can we store power to serve us comfortably throughout the night? This can be an uphill task to resolve.
Using massive battery packs is bound to fail since it will be more expensive coupled with lower power density compared to demand. Storage efficiency will also lead to substantial power loss. The disadvantages are more than the benefits.
Suppose we create a giant lake, where we pump water into during the day using surplus electricity? This seems like a great idea, right. This is also a flop because electric pumps are about 50% efficient at pumping water while turbans have 90% potential to turn the potential energy into electrical power. Therefore, such a system can only offer us a 45% efficiency.
Solar panels costs have been dwindling while brushless motor technology has advanced, courtesy of low-cost motor controllers.
