Yoga retreat centre Vagabond Temple provides students with opportunities to experience authentic Cambodian culture and give back to the community.

[KRONG KAEB, 17/11/2017] - Vagabond Temple, a yoga and meditation retreat centre in Kep, Cambodia, incorporates Karma Yoga in its programme. Through Karma Yoga, a path of selfless action, Vagabond Temple students experience true local culture and then have an opportunity to give back to the community.

A Daily Practice

Vagabond Temple students practice Karma Yoga every day in and out of the centre. They give selfless service within the temple through their daily chores and organising a personal community project. Theycan start any initiative such as teaching English to locals, or holding educational workshops for disadvantaged children.
Other community projects done by previous students include:
• Beach clean-ups
• Gardening tasks
• Recycling
• Decorative art for the retreat centre

Daily Interaction with Locals

Through students’ practice of Karma Yoga, they interact with locals and have a more meaningful experience with the Kep community. Although Karma Yoga is done without expectation of reward, Vagabond Temple’s students become enriched in present day Khmer culture. Students also experience some of Khmer’s traditions. Last November, for example, the centre organised a boat race competition for the community of Sihanoukville. The charming town’s families gathered for the festivity, to dance, throw rice, and feed each other the traditional sweet rice ombok.

Journey to Self-Realisation

Karma Yoga is just one part of Vagabond Temple’s comprehensive retreat programme. Vagabond Temple also teaches yoga postures (Asana), meditation, spiritual philosophies (i.e. Yoga, Tantra and Buddhism), nutrition and more. All Vagabond Temples teaching are geared towards helping students break with old tendencies to live in accordance with their true self.
