Pittsburgh, PA: Spirulina is a type of cyanobacteria formerly known as blue-green algae that live primarily in fresh and saltwater. Various studies show that taking spirulina everyday offers a wide range of health benefits.
Health Benefits of Spirulina
A single seven-gram dose of dried spirulina is rich in protein and low in calories. It also contains a large percentage of the recommended daily amount for:
• Vitamin B1
• Vitamin B2
• Vitamin B3
• Copper
• Iron
A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food shows that spirulina benefits us by helping lower LDL or bad cholesterol levels, while improving good or HDL cholesterol. A separate study also suggests that the antioxidant properties of spirulina helps protect LDL cholesterol from oxidation, which helps slow the progression of diseases such as asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, and Parkinson’s disease.
Taking at least 4.5 grams of spirulina daily also helps lower normal blood pressure, according to findings published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture. Additionally, spirulina shows potential in improving blood sugar control, even outperforming common diabetes medications like Metformin in some small studies.
Spirulina Shows Potential in Reducing Cancer Risk
Two separate research findings indicate that spirulina also possesses anti-cancer properties. Animal studies point towards spirulina’s potential in reducing tumor size and cancer occurrence.
Moreover, researchers noted that taking spirulina daily helped reduce the appearance of precancerous mouth lesions in study participants. Upon stopping their spirulina intake, nearly half of the same participants saw an increase in their lesion growth.
The majority of spirulina studies were based on dried or processed supplements. However, researchers noted that using fresh spirulina may yield better health benefits, due to having more and higher quality bioactive compounds.
