Selling is crucial for any company, but let's face it, before selling you need to have a product or service, and before talking about sales in digital marketing, let's talk about the product you want to sell.

Digital marketing for bad product doesn't work.

Your product needs to be at least good, deliver what it promises and be different from the competition.

A product that does not deliver what it promises can even be sold through Digital Marketing, but it is nothing more than a promise. In that case, you run the risk of having what I consider one of the biggest nightmares for a business: dissatisfied customers on the internet.

You might also think that a good product doesn't need marketing. It's a common mistake, unfortunately. And I ask you: what's the point of having an excellent product tucked away and nobody knows about it?

Do an exercise, think about some products and services that you consume. Think of a brand of clothing, shoes, a model of car, cell phone, television, notebook, etc. Well, as much as these products perform, they need to explore marketing and advertising not only to show how good the product is, but why the competition is going to do it.

If you have the best product in the world tucked away and your competitor has an inferior product and is doing marketing and advertising, who do you think will succeed?

Now that we understand the importance of having a quality product, let's go to the big question:

The goal of digital marketing must include sales, whether in the short, medium or long term. It is through sales that the company will generate profit.

Every sale needs a buyer. B2C or B2B, someone needs to buy what's for sale. And in the purchase decision, we consumers consider, in addition to crucial points of a brand, the value that that product will provide us.

Brand credibility. If we consider big brands such as Adidas, Nike, Honda, Fiat, Apple, Samsung, etc., they have already done and maintain a thorough job to maintain their credibility in the market. And they do. An Adidas shirt is associated with a lifestyle: that too is value. A Nike running shoe will help you do your sport: quality.

If you walk into the Adidas store and the shirt that represents your lifestyle is hidden in the manager's drawer at the back of the store, will you buy it? You probably won't even know about its existence. If the United State Fiat made the new Toro model and didn't tell anyone, would anyone buy it? Your brand needs to have a good image in front of the public. It needs to be recognized as a company that delivers what it promises, that has a good product, a value proposition and that makes the public feel the desire to purchase its products.

Being recognized as a quality brand – and this is different from selling products at a high price – saves your company arguments to convince the customer to buy your product. In other words, it facilitates the process and communication.

Let's use another example: Apple announces the launch of a new model of iPhone. People will queue up to buy regardless of the benefits that the device has. Now imagine a company without Apple's recognition releasing a device as good as the new iPhone at half price. It will take a lot of communication and a lot of argument to gain the public's trust to the point of wanting to risk trying this new product.

See how one thing helps the other? How does working on the brand image facilitate sales arguments?

Therefore, Digital Marketing goes far beyond just selling. Selling without a brand structure, without a good product, without a study and specific planning for the brand can be a sandcastle.

It is not my goal to belittle those who sell formulas to sell through digital marketing, because most of them know and use this process of authority and brand credibility.

I found this explanation necessary because I see many brands wanting to sell quickly and cheaply. It doesn't mean that this is impossible, obviously it is possible, but a sales job is inconsistent without working on the brand.

Planning and patience, in the medium and long term, is profitable. If your brand is new to the market, or comes from a timid performance, you will need to argue a lot to make your target audience believe they can buy your product.

When we consumers already know a brand, follow its work, either through social networks or independently, or even when the brand has already helped us with relevant content, tips and information, it becomes easier to consume your product. Basically, the question of whether or not the company will deliver what it promises is set aside to give way to the expectation of receiving a desired product.
