As of this date, there has not been any published research or documentation presented in the medical or scientific community with indisputable evidence demonstrating.

A concise report exposing the myths between Direct Sunlight Tanning, Ultraviolet Tanning Devices and sunless tanning products. Outlining the important facts and differences in application and health related results.

A couple of years ago a major news channel ran a report alleging the dangers of Dihydroxyacetone or DHA. DHA is primarily used as the active ingredient in Sunless tanning products. Sunless tanners are designed to be applied directly to the skin to produce and even darkened tone. Sunless tanning products can be purchased by consumers online and are also sold in most beauty or tanning salons. Many do contain the key ingredient DHA.

The report focused on lab studies conducted on non-human subjects and expressed an increased danger of DHA being carcinogenic. Although there has never been any documented study done on human subjects, DHA has had a remarkable record of no health complications over its thirty year history as a sunless tanning ingredient.

Typically, the way consumers would apply a sunless tanning, after removing dead skin from the body the liquid is applied evenly to the skin and the tanning process takes about 4-6 hrs. Some may apply it just before going to bed so the process does not get interrupted by adverse liquids such as showering or bathing.

The claims are that DHA stains not only the dead layer of skin cells but also the non-dead cells deeper beneath the initial layer. In actual human studies and numerous reports ultraviolet tanning beds and sun light, can not only cause skin cancer but may also cause cataracts if proper eye protection is not worn before entering the tanning bed or outdoors.

So far there have been studies done relative to any human the contracting cancer as a result of the use of sunless tanning products compared to direct sunbathing or ultraviolet light applied devices.

Fact #1: Ultraviolet tanning can cause wrinkles in the skin. Although some types of surgery can remove these wrinkles, for the most part they are permanent.

Fact #2: 90% of the aging of the skin is cause by the sunlight. When tanning in the sun you are actually burning the skin and causing skin damage. The only possible benefit to tanning in the sun is an increase your vitamin D levels, initiating power endorphins. The end results are usually pre-mature aging of the skin.

Fact #3: There is well documented increased in the risk of skin cancer as a result of unprotected exposure to sunlight and the overexposure to ultraviolet light from tanning devices.

Another point that was purported went to exclaim that there is also the potential danger of aerosol inhalation when people sprayed on sunless tanner product. But just as using an underarm deodorant the same common sense precautions must be take to avoid inhaling those fumes. The same will apply to aerosol based tanners for spray as a spray on application.
