Recently Navi Mumbai Traffic Police has celebrated National Road Safety week, with several events organized all over the city to spread the message of road safety amongst the people. Many lives are lost due to accidents every year, and India is reported to have the highest traffic accident rate worldwide with over 14,000 deaths annually. This is because most of the people, especially the youth, do not follow basic traffic rules like wearing helmets, using seat belts & speed limit.

One such case was brought to Wockhardt Hospitals, Vashi recently. Mr. Manoj Vaman Aait, a 17 years old boy from Raigad was brought unconscious to Wockhardt hospital, Vashi from a government hospital where he was intubated and kept on Ventilator support after a serious road traffic accident. This case was difficult to handle as the patient was unconscious for many days and was in the ICCU for almost a month. He had severe head injury and his ear, nose and mouth were bleeding, and he also had displaced fracture in right leg & nasal bones. He was shifted with Ventilated Associated Pneumonia (VAP) in a critical state for further management at Sterling Wockhardt Hospital, Vashi. A CT-scan revealed that the patient had subdural hematoma and intracerebral haemorrage. (Read: How to provide first-aid in a road-traffic accident)

‘He was in coma for 18 days, with right sided leg bone fracture. A tracheostomy was done and appropriate care was initiated with expert supervision .It was important that he should slowly and steadily come out of Ventilator .We were successful in achieving the same’ , said Dr. Akshay Chhallani, Consultant Physician & Intensivist , Sterling Wockhardt Hospital – Vashi

Orthopedic consultant & Maxillofacial Consultants had suggested two surgeries (ORIF with interlocking nailing of right femur & advised closed reduction of nasal septum fracture under GA / LA). which was done successfully and patient recovered. Soon after that physiotherapy exercises were started, which improved the patient’s condition Efforts resulted in fully conscious & well oriented patient & hence he could come out of ICU to Ward. In a due course of time patient was comfortable in speaking and was discharged to live an independent and successful healthy life.

Mr. Nishant Jaiswal, Centre Head, Sterling Wockhardt Hospitals, Vashi said, ‘Handling such critical cases is always challenging and the amount of effort and care displayed by our staff and consultants gives us confidence that we are capable of handling such critical cases at Sterling Wockhardt Hospitals, Vashi. With the growing incidences of accidents, it is important that everyone follows all the traffic rules to ensure not only personal safety but also the safety of their families’
