Married At First Sight contestant defends her involvement in controversial show

A CONTESTANT on the upcoming season of Married At First Sight has vented on Facebook about how she believed there would be a same-sex couple in the mix this season.

Clare Verrall said the reason she agreed to be on the show was because she was told the producers “were very keen to have a gay couple on our season”.

“That didn’t end up being the case this season which was disappointing,” she said.

The blonde single from Melbourne also said, if the wedding was legal, there was “no way” she would have done it.

Ms Verrall posted on her Facebook page yesterday that she was one of the four brides who would marry a complete stranger on the second series of the controversial Channel Nine show, which airs next month.

One of her Facebook friends took issue with her involvement in the program saying he thought she was “intelligent”.

“I am amazed you signed up for this,” Anthony Wiseman wrote on Ms Verrall’s page.

“Intelligent I thought you were. I find this program makes a mockery of marriage. I can’t marry my partner of 6 years because our governments won’t pass legislation claiming it is breaking down the importance of marriage, yet shows like this can allow a person to potentially marry someone they meet after just a few short months.”

It was in her lengthy response that Ms Verrall said one of the reasons she agreed to do the show was to highlight Australia’s “total bullsh*t” stance on gay marriage.

“Firstly, the ‘weddings’ on MAFS are not legally binding marriages,” wrote Verrall.

“However, the reason I ended up accepting (to) do the show was I was told they were very keen to have a gay couple on our season which I was elated by & was what got me across the line agreeing to go ahead with the show.

“That didn’t end up being the case this season which was disappointing, however maybe next season so if you are a single homosexual person willing to take a MASSIVE risk on love, apply!

“If this was a legal wedding there is NO WAY I would have done it.

“I will say, that while my parents have been married for over 35 years, personally I have never been a girl who dreamt of her ‘wedding day’. While I love the idea of being married, the actual ‘wedding’ just never appealed to me.

“I certainly intend to use this 15 minutes of Z grade ‘fame’ to highlight the issues which are important to me. One of which certainly includes marriage equality. This is something very close to my heart, as I have many close friends who cannot currently marry their long term partners because our backwards government isn’t listening to the 81% of Australians who want marriage equality passed.

“As the law stands in Australia currently, I could marry someone I had known for a minimum of just 30 days, while people who are in love with their long term partners, who just happen to be the same sex cannot legally marry. It is total bullsh*t & Australia should be ashamed of how backwards this is.”

Married at First Sight features four couples, matched by three experts, who agree to marry when they first meet. The couples do not partake in a legally binding marriage, due to legal restrictions, but instead meet as strangers at the altar of a commitment ceremony.

The couples spend their wedding night in a hotel, then leave for a honeymoon. They then live together for a month, whereafter they choose whether they will continue their relationship.
