What is gonorrhoea?
It is a bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoea, or gonococcus that causes gonorrhoea. A slang term that is sometimes used to describe gonorrhoea is “the clap.” It is passed through unprotected vaginal, anal and oral sex and through using unwashed sex toys that have not been covered with a condom. It is not passed through kissing, toilet seats, swimming pools or sharing crockery and so on. [1,2]

What are the symptoms?
Around half of women and 1 in 10 men have no symptoms. Men who experience symptoms typically have an unusual discharge from the tip of the penis, pain when urinating and sometimes testicle pain. Women may experience an unusual discharge, pain when urinating, lower abdominal pain and, rarely, bleeding between periods. [1,2]

What is the treatment?
You no longer have to visit a GP to obtain gonorrhoea 2nd line treatment. Second line treatment is in the form of a single dose of 2 antibiotics called Azithromycin and Cefixime. This treatment also clears chlamydia and can be bought online after .having been positively tested for gonorrhoea or had sexual contact with someone who has been positively tested.

How can you obtain treatment?
