From the day we are born it is a daily concern to receive sustenance so when we have a problem with our mouth, throat, stomach or intestines it forms a major disruption to our day-to-day life. We, as people, used to dream of being able to see what was wrong with us deep inside and it just is not a dream to be able to diagnose and see in this manner. The Korean capsule endoscopy system enables pictures inside the stomach and the entire of the small bowel. Intromedic launched the Mirocam in order to give practitioners better diagnoses as well as better views of patients undergoing endoscopy. It is these goals that motivated Intromedic to produce a comprehensive diagnostic system comprising both a capsule and diagnostic software that aids clinicians.

There are many who rave of the virtues of Intromedic’s Mirocam. Distributors and clinicians tout the scope and effectiveness of the Mirocam for capsule endoscopy procedures. What is most described is the efficiency of both the wide view lens and the accompanying software that acts almost like a clinician’s assistant.

Mirocam capsule endoscopy works by wirelessly transmitting images from inside the body. The Mirocam capsule endoscopy system captures images for a period of 12 hours. In this manner it is able to capture images from the esophagus to the colon during it operation time. The images produced by the Mirocam are color and used to be able to diagnose ulcers, bleeding, erosion, Crohn’s disease, polyps and other disorders of these organs. The frame rate of the capsule is 3 frames per second thereby enabling 118,800 frames per second. The lens view of the Mirocam has a view of 150 degrees. The lens is capable of capturing detail both due to the resolution, color and lens view of the capsule.

The entire size of the Mirocam capsule is 11 x 24mm thus enabling easy swallowing and comfort to the patient. In so far as transmission and patient safety is concerned, IntroMedic encourage questions direct to the company about methods and risks. But the company does ensure that the capsule has been developed with the highest level of functionality as well as patient concern in mind.

The software that accompanies the Mirocam is the Miroview and the Miroview gives distinct advantages built into the software package. Components of the software package include: an image atlas, image enhancement, quick view mode, capsule positioning, multi display function, an image capture box and a large image window for viewing and making a diagnosis of a captured area. Additionally, advanced reporting is enabled, the software is password protected, you can export images as pictures or videos, you can zoom in to images and you can list all patient files on one page. There also is a rechargeable receiver for the transmission of images. If the static viewing of the endoscopy is prolonged the convenience of also having an extra set of rechargeable batteries is welcomed and catered for.

The definitive advantages of the Mirocam are numerous. Advantages include: a wider field of view, a smaller capsule size, a higher frame rate, a longer operation time and higher quality images. It is possible to view images in real time and this allows for efficient consultation as well as if a very dangerous situation is identified either through the software’s capability to identify bleeding in pictures or the clinician’s eye then it can be remedied that much sooner.

In July 2000 the capsule endoscopy technology project was launched by the Intelligent Microsystem center in the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. After the prototype was produced in 2002 clinical trials were conducted. After being nominated as a top research and development achievement in 2004, the company received a patent for the communication technology and the patent for the receiver system in 2005.
