Do You Know Yuja cha(Citron Tea)? a Korean Traditional Hot Tea full of Vitamin C

One of Korea’s most successful producers of citron tea mixture is Duwon Agricultural Cooperative, a company that won the grand prize as Korea’s Representative Brand Award selected by consumers.

 
Citron tea, otherwise known as Yuja cha, is a Korean traditional tea made of Yuja, or citron in English. With the onset of winter, one of the maladies we all invariable suffer from is the common cold, or even worse, influenza.

Citron tea is deliciously sweet and tart and full of Vitamin C. Yuja is a citrus fruit that is yellowish green in color, and similar in appearance to a lemon, but with a very acidic and dry pulp. It is a favorite hot drink enjoyed at any time of day or night by office workers, homemakers, students coming home from school, and so forth.

Most importantly it is high in Vitamin C content. For centuries, citron tea has been used by Koreans as a preventive remedy against the common cold and, influenza Yuja first came to Korea during the era of the Silla kingdom (57 B.C. - A.D. 935).

According to legend, one of the king’s subjects was carrying Yuja from China to Korea, when a sudden storm hit the boat and capsized it as he was about to arrive on the southern coast of Korea. That shock crushed the Yuja and the seeds went into the bottom of the man’s coat. Of the peninsula, the seeds fell to the ground and later grew into fruit bearing Yuja trees.

One of Korea’s most successful producers of citron tea mixture is Duwon Agricultural Cooperative, a company that won the grand prize as Korea’s Representative Brand Award selected by consumers. Its citron processing factory operated by Duwon Nonghyup (agricultural cooperative federation) was established in 1993. At that time, it was the first large-scale factory for citron-processing in Korea. Duwon went on to win the One Million Dollar Export Tower Award in 1997, the Two Million Dollar Export Tower Award in 2004, the Five Million Dollar Export Tower Award in 2006 and the Seven Million Dollar Export Tower Award in 2007. Following this, the company also won the world's first class products award by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy in 2004. In 2005, the company obtained HACCP and ISO9001 certifications and started to export to Japan, a country known to be very strict on food hygiene, and also to China, which is recognized as the home of teas.

Citrons are harvested in the early winter along the south coast of Korea. Because of their tart quality, citrons cannot be eaten on their own or as juice. Instead they are usually sliced and preserved for making tea.

Citrons contain large amounts of nutrients. In each 100g of citron are contained 150mg of vitamin C, which is three times as much as that in the same amount of lemon. Lemon is well known as a fruit containing abundant vitamin C. For centuries in Korea citron tea has been consumed to help cure colds, but it is also highly valued for maintaining the skin in good condition. A component in citron called ‘hesperidins’ protects the capillaries, like vitamin P.
The tart quality in citrons comes from citrus acid, which comprises more than 4% of all substances in one piece of fruit. This substance helps relieve fatigue, and stimulates the secretion of digestive fluid, which in turn stimulates the appetite.

To make this tea, all you need to do is add boiling water and let it cool slightly before drinking it. The residue fruit can even be enjoyed after drinking the tea, with a teaspoon, like many kids do when they need an extra boost of sugar for energy. A cup of Duwon’s citron tea is just what you need to protect your health and enjoy as a hot drink, day or night.
