As an artist, it is important and even essential that new outlets of creativity be explored and endeavoured. Writing, especially, allows an artist to give an even further depth to self-exploration as well as self-identity as a creative. For Michael Onona, the past year has provided an array of self-reflection to discover his thoughts and storytelling through words. His new blog, an extension of his home website featuring his paintings, www.ononastudio.com, has developed extensive content and audience following over the past year.

From childhood memories to thoughts on human behaviour, Onona provides audiences with subjects to think about and reflect on their own experiences. This blog allows Onona to communicate with followers and lets followers comment and ask Onona questions that would not be available through a traditional website form. Conversations can be read between artist and reader for a worldwide audience to browse.

In an excerpt from the blog, Onona says, “When I was 6 years old, my father asked me, what did I want to be when I grow up, I replied an artist (I might as well have said axe murderer), and I have never waived from that conviction of saying and meaning ‘artist’, not oil painter, not watercolorist, not sculptor, nor any other form of artistic pigeonholing.”

This self-defining word as artist is now explored in the form of writing and Onona does an excellent job capturing the attention of the audience. Onona has shown spiritual depth through oil paintings and continues to do so in blogging. Monthly entries give new insight for readers on a regular basis to keep readers interested and captivated.

Onona also writes about other artists throughout the years, whether it is music, sculpture or paintings, which have inspired him. He writes, “As an artist it is so easy to make life all about the work, to forget, or maybe even want to forget about a life outside of art, but its exactly that other life that makes the work. A blank canvas has no meaning until we give it meaning, it has no soul until we give it soul, for art to exist it needs that stimulus of another life, it needs us to feel, see and smell that other life. We don’t breathe life into our work, we breathe our lives into it.”

Whether you are an artist, art enthusiast, or just want to learn more about yourself, Onona’s writings provide a great pathway for self-exploration. To start reading and following Onona, visit http://ononastudio.com/
