Madrid, Spain, July 19, 2013 - Marca España and the Spanish Sailing Federation have today signed an agreement to promote the World Sailing Championships, which will be held in Santander, the capital city of Cantabria in September 2014.

The agreement was signed at the Palacio de la Magdalena in Santander by the High Commissioner for the Marca España, Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros, and the President of the Spanish Sailing Federation, José Ángel Rodríguez Santos, during a ceremony attended by the Mayor of Santander, Íñigo de la Serna.

The aim of this collaboration agreement between the two institutions is to “harness synergies” around the World Championship for all the Olympic sailing disciplines to be held in Santander in 2014. The collaboration will commence this year with the promotion of the test event for participants from 9 to 15 September 2013 in Santander.

“We believe that sport is one of the components of the Marca España. It is a sector that gives us nothing but good news – not just because of our sportspeople’s victories, but also because of Spain’s organisational capacity at major events", said Espinosa de los Monteros.

Similarly, Rodríguez Santos described this agreement as “a kind of symbol of quality” for the event’s organisers, saying it “could make it easier” to obtain the required financing. The Mayor of Santander, Íñigo de la Serna, pointed out that this agreement will make it “easier” to find sponsorship and source help with organising the event, through “associating the value of the World Championships with the value of the Marca España”.

He also stressed that this is an “extraordinarily ambitious event”, saying the preparatory work for it, in terms of both infrastructure and organisation, was progressing “very quickly” and “in the right direction”.
