Madrid, Spain, July 10, 2013 - CAF has been awarded a €380 million contract to supply 35 trains, each with eight carriages, to the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo.

This order strengthens the Brazilian presence of this company, which is based in Beasain (Guipúzcoa), and which currently has a combined project portfolio valued at around €2 billion.

CAF says these factors consolidate it as the “leading train manufacturer in Brazil”, where it also has a production plant in Hortolandia, in the State of Sao Paulo, which is regarded as the most modern in Latin America.

Spanish news agency EFE says this new contract involves manufacturing and supplying 35 train units, each with eight carriages (a total of 280 carriages) for the Sao Paulo Metropolitan Train Company (CPTM) in the State of Sao Paulo. The first of them are to be delivered at the start of 2015.

This train order is part of the improvement work being undertaken ahead of Brazil’s forthcoming sports events, which will include the extension and modernisation of the transport network operated by CPTM. In total, it covers 22 municipalities in the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo, transporting 2.6 million passengers.

Other companies also submitted bids for this contract, through which CAF will boost its internationalisation. These included the South Korean-Brazilian consortium IESA-Hyundai Rotem and the Chinese company Changchun Railway.
