Surfing is an extremely fun and healthy activity that just about anyone can enjoy. You cannot visit Southern California without stopping at one of its many wonderful beaches that boasts of waves for surfers with all styles and skill levels. It would not be right for you to visit Los Angeles and not learn to surf in Los Angeles since there is no activity more perfect to do with your family. Surfing in LA is a must, no matter if you’re just visiting for a few days or have lived here for your entire life.

If you have limited time on your visit and can only visit one beach, you may have a difficult time choosing. Let us now explore some of L.A.’s finest beaches and discover what they have to offer to the wanderlust-stricken souls. Which LA beach should top your list depends completely on what you’re looking for:

Malibu Lagoon State Beach- This spot- situated at the confluence of Malibu Creek and the Pacific Ocean- is extremely popular among surfing enthusiasts, ornithologists, and history-buffs. Surfers get to ride some of the best waves in Southern California. It is perhaps the most popular surfing destination in Los Angeles County. Summer water temperatures are around 72 degrees. Surfrider Beach is a big part of Malibu Lagoon State Beach, and the beach caters to different levels of surfers as there are three points that break along this beach. While the third is more beginner-friendly, professionals or experienced surfers can enjoy the breaks off of the first and second point. Be on the lookout for the occasional professional, local legend or celebrity surfer here.

Venice Beach- This is a fun spot to catch mostly mellow waves. This is an ideal spot for beginners to test out the waters in view of a slew of surf rental shops and instructors. Apart from swimming and surfing, the other attractions include an adjoining skating arena, a fully-equipped gymnasium, the Venice Pier, and a broad canal system, rightfully making Venice Beach a highly popular attraction for local and international tourists alike.

Santa Monica State Beach- This big beach, which effectively runs the length of Santa Monica itself, is one of the most iconic and scenic beaches of LA. Aside from surfing, swimming, and paddle-boarding being some of the most popular water activities, beach volleyball is a tradition. If you don’t find something to do here, you are not looking.

Huntington Beach- With over 50 surfing competitions held each year, plus its surf breaks, International Surfing Museum, and vibrant day and nightlife, this is one place you’ll want to visit to surf and watch surfers in action. Moreover, there are plenty of surf shops if you want to rent a board or buy a towel.

Some other popular beaches:

1. Paradise Cove Beach
2. Redondo Beach
3. Hermosa Beach
4. Topanga State Beach
5. Manhattan Beach
6. Zuma Beach County Park and Westward Beach

These are just a sampling of the great beach experiences you can have in Los Angeles. Don’t forget to bring and apply your sunscreen, drink plenty of water throughout the day, and enjoy your visit.
